A Survey on the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Industrial Health

Abstract
To acquire more useful data for the development of industrial health services, the knowledge-attitude-and practice survey was carried out on 1, 176 employees, 137 industrial health workers¡¯, and 334 employers in Chonnam province over 7 months from February to August, 1983.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The knowledge of employees on industrial health was poorer than industrialhealth workers, but was not significantly different compared with employers¢¥. Nevertheless they showed the most active attitude and practice than any others on industrial health services.
2. The knowledge of industrial health workers was best, but their attitude and practice were not satisfactory compared with employees¢¥. Furthermore almost all the health workers in small industries serviced with part-time, and their knowledge, attitude and practice on industrial health were inadequate.
3. In general the knowledge, attitude and practice of employers seemed to be comparatively low, passive and negative.
4. The knowledge, attitude and practice of respondents on industrial health showed considerable difference depending upon the scale of industries.
Generally the respondents belonged to small industries knew little, tended to take negative attitude and to act passively. On the other hand employees in small industries showed the most desirable attitude and practice despite of their poor knowledge.
5. Demand for the extension of health insurance systems was increased for the best way of health management with the decrease in the scale of a plant.
6. Majorities of respondents were not satisfied to periodic health examination because of incompetence of items and poor follow-up care.
7. Most of all employees wanted periodic health examination and environmental measurement should be reflected on the health and environmental management.
8. Employees seemed to be more interested in health education than employers.
9. Almost all the respondents agreed to the close relation of health and safety. But they thought safety was more important.
10. In spite of poor activities of many industrial physicians, 51.4% of employees desired more financial support for industrial physicians¢¥ activities.
11. Nutrition and health condition of employees were not satisfactory and 62.8 % of employees wanted to overwork to gain an allowance for over-time work even if they injured their health, therefore labor conditions must to be improved urgently.
